Toni Morrison — born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931; who worked for years as a book editor at Random House, championing Black writers, while raising two sons and writing her own novels in the early morning; whose Beloved (1987) won the Pulitzer Prize; who in 1993 became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature; and who died in 2019 at eighty-eight — spoke these words in a 1981 address to the Ohio Arts Council, explaining why she had begun writing at all.

Morrison said she wrote her first novel, The Bluest Eye, because it was the book she wanted to read and could not find. “I Am Woman” — Helen Reddy (from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, 1971)

Helen Reddy — born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1941, to a family of stage performers — wrote “I Am Woman” with the Australian guitarist Ray Burton, and first recorded it for her 1971 album I Don’t Know How to Love Him. A re-recorded single climbed to number one in the United States in December 1972, and when she accepted the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, she famously thanked God “because She makes everything possible.”

The oracle hears the first-claiming in this song. It became an anthem of the women’s movement because it did something radical for its time: it let a woman sing, without apology, about her own strength and her right to be heard.
