the tender first small winnowing

TODAY’S SMALL TENDER FIRST-WINNOWING
Sacred First-Winnowing · Sacred Waning-Crescent-Virgo-Moon · Sacred Mercury-Day · Sacred Moon-Visiting-Mercury-Home · Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home · Sacred Fourth-Week-Continuing · Eight of Pentacles · Sacred twenty-seventh day of the newly-begun cycle

A sacred first-winnowing day for gentle post-releasing-hearth-tending, tender first-lion-taming-with-love,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-winnowing meeting the released arc of the fresh 30-day cycle as the Moon herself completes Cancer’s tender sacred water and softly ingresses into Leo’s tender sacred fire (Sun’s own venerated domicile home) on Sun’s own venerated day.

The Energy of the Day

Today, the Waning Crescent Moon (~15-22%) rests softly at her first day at Virgo’s tender sacred earth (Mercury’s own venerated earth-home) as the Sun rests softly at her fifteenth full day at Libra’s tender sacred air. Wednesday belongs, faithfully, to Mercury — the sacred small tender messenger-god’s own venerated day of the discerning small work, doubled today because the Moon also visits his home.

The sovereign feminine takes the arc’s tempered essence (yesterday’s Sacred First-Winnowing) and softly winnows it — through discernment, through the moving air of honest attention, through the small tender chisel-work of one small tender look at a time — into what will be carried through the coming dark days into the next cycle. This is the sacred first-winnowing current: not the hoarding of every impression, not the harsh discarding of what is imperfect, just the honest sorting of what is essence from what is not.

Sacred First-Winnowing is the sovereign feminine’s ancient agricultural sacrament — the grain thrown softly into the moving air, the wind carrying the chaff away, the heavy grain of true essence falling softly back into her hands. She is invisible from the outside and known only, faithfully, by the interior clearing that follows.

What This Looks Like in the Body

In the body, the sacred first-winnowing may arrive as the willingness to release — an impression already served, a version of a story that no longer holds true, a piece of over-received data that can now be softly let fall. The small clarity in the mind when one small already-served impression softly releases. The small quiet in the belly when the hoarding impulse eases. The small honest widening of attention when the winnowed essence stands alone in its dense sovereignty.

The body may also notice a small tender resistance to winnowing — the keep-everything voice worried that letting anything fall away is disloyal, the modern-culture pull to keep every possibility open, the small tender fear that discerning what is not essence is somehow harsh. All of this is honored. The sacred first-winnowing does not require the resistance to disappear; she only invites one small piece of the moving air of discernment to be softly trusted.

Mercury presides doubly today at the discernment-throne of the sky. His current in the body is not, faithfully, cold analysis but the messenger-god’s honest scribe-work — the small tender writing-down of only what is, faithfully, essence. The sovereign feminine borrows the scribe’s wisdom softly: honest attention is, itself, the whole winnowing.

Reflection for the Day

The sacred first-winnowing asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question today: what one small piece of received impression, opinion, story, or accumulated data has already, faithfully, done its service in my life, and can I, softly, allow it to fall away?

The Waning Crescent Moon softens the whole reflection — there is no urgency, no productive frame, no requirement that the winnowing produce a dramatic clearing. The small tender sorting is, faithfully, its own whole practice.

Because Mercury presides doubly on his own day at his own Virgo throne, the winnowing carries a small tender scribe-current — the messenger-god’s wisdom that the honest sorting requires only sustained attention, never harshness. Mary Oliver’s three-line teaching lives here directly: pay attention, be astonished, tell about it. Attention is winnowing; astonishment is the arrival of what is essence; the telling is what remains.

Thought of the Day

The sovereign feminine’s winnowing is the arc’s honest gift. What she softly lets fall today is what she will not, faithfully, have to carry through the coming dark days; what remains is dense enough to seed the next cycle.

Affirmation

Today, softly, I throw the arc’s tempered essence into the small tender air of my own honest discernment — and the sacred first-winnowing is, faithfully, sorting only what will be carried forward.

Questions to Consider
  1. What one small piece of received impression, opinion, story, or accumulated data has already, faithfully, done its service and can now be softly thanked and released?
  2. What one small version of a story about yourself, another person, or your own inner life is no longer, faithfully, as true as it once was, and can now be softly set down?
  3. Where in your body do you feel the winnowing happening — in the chest, the throat, the belly, the hands? What does the winnowing-current there ask you to trust today?
  4. What one small essence has fallen softly back into your hands as heavy grain — what is, faithfully, worth carrying forward into the coming dark days and into the next cycle?
Quote of the Day
“Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.”
— Mary Oliver, Red Bird

Mary Oliver — the American poet born in Maple Heights, Ohio, in 1935, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984 for American Primitive and the National Book Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems; who published more than twenty collections over a half-century of writing and became, quietly, one of the most beloved poets of her generation — wrote the poem “Sometimes” for her collection Red Bird, published by Beacon Press in 2008. She died in Hobe Sound, Florida, in January 2019 at eighty-three, having spent decades walking the woods and marshes alone with a notebook.

Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. These three small lines are, faithfully, Oliver’s most-quoted words. Attention was her whole spiritual practice, and attention is, faithfully, the sovereign feminine’s honest winnowing: the moving mind that discerns what is essence from what is not, without harshness, simply through the sustained honest looking.

Today’s Sacred First-Winnowing lives in Oliver’s teaching directly. Paying attention is the winnowing act itself. The astonishment is the arrival of essence — the moment the heavy grain falls softly back into the hands. The telling is what remains — the small tender record kept only of what will, faithfully, be carried forward.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Blowin’ in the Wind” — Bob Dylan (from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, 1963)

Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind” in April 1962, at twenty years old, in a café across from the Gaslight in Greenwich Village. He recorded it for Columbia in July 1962, and it appeared on his second album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, released May 1963. Peter, Paul and Mary’s cover reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 that same summer and turned the song into a civil-rights anthem heard across the country. It has, faithfully, been recorded more than three hundred times since — by Joan Baez, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, and Marlene Dietrich among many others — and remains one of the most enduring songs of the twentieth century.

The song’s central refrain — the answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind, the answer is blowin’ in the wind — is, faithfully, the winnowing-teaching itself. The answer is not, faithfully, held in one place; it is carried by the moving air of honest attention, discerned only by the sovereign who softly throws her questions into the wind and waits for the essence to fall back. Today’s Sacred First-Winnowing, held by Mercury’s doubly-venerated Wednesday and Virgo’s harvest-throne, moves gently in Dylan’s song: the sovereign feminine’s trust that the winnowing wind carries away only what was, faithfully, ready to leave.

Parting Thought
May the tender first small winnowing be offered, softly, through your own actual lived form,
and may you allow the small first-sorting of essence-from-chaff her own faithful pace of quietly discerning what will be carried forward into the coming dark days.
May the small tender winnowing be enough —
the small piece of already-served impression softly thanked and released, the small piece of no-longer-true story softly honored and set down, the small tender air of your own discernment softly carrying the chaff away while the heavy grain of true essence falls softly back into your hands.
May Mercury’s scribe-wisdom soften with you —
the small tender messenger-god’s doubly-venerated day of honest attention, the small tender knowing that discernment is not, faithfully, harshness but the sustained looking that reveals what is essence, the small tender trust that the winnowing wind carries away only what was, faithfully, ready to leave, on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday at Mercury’s own Virgo home.
Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.
The body has, faithfully, offered the tender first small winnowing softly on the sacred twenty-seventh morning of the newly-begun cycle — the Sacred First-Winnowing with the Waning Crescent Moon at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday.
