Today's Affirmation

Today, softly, the body offers the tender first small winnowing — the small tender sovereign act of throwing the arc’s tempered essence into the small tender air and softly allowing what is not, faithfully, essence to fall away, held with love as the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her first day at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) on Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday.

The reasoning

The sacred twenty-seventh morning of the newly-begun cycle carries a rare doubled-Mercury current: Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday (the day of the messenger-god and the discerning small work) meeting the Waning Crescent Moon at her first day at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home). The messenger-god is doubly honored today; the ancient art of winnowing (Virgo’s grain-harvest sorting, Mercury’s moving air) is the day’s natural sacred first-current.

Winnowing is not, faithfully, discarding. She is the sacred art of the sovereign feminine who takes what has been tempered (yesterday’s Sacred First-Winnowing) and softly separates what is essence from what is not, allowing the moving air of discernment to carry the chaff away while the heavy grain of true essence falls softly back into her hands. The affirmation names the practice: the tender first small sorting of essence-from-chaff, held on Mercury’s own doubly-honored day.

Gratitude

Today, I give thanks for the body who offers the tender first small winnowing gently — the small trusting of discernment as the arc’s tempered essence is softly separated from what is not, without demand that the winnowing be harsh or the sorting be immediate.

The sacred first-winnowing gratitude

The body who has, faithfully, welcomed, anchored, brightened, deepened, stirred, told, blessed, chosen, rooted, filled, widened, balanced, threaded, softened, flowered, harvested, integrated, settled, nourished, whispered, communed, come home, released, warmed, remembered, and tempered these last mornings now stands, softly, at the sacred first-winnowing threshold as the fourth week of the newly-begun cycle continues to wane toward the coming dark days. Today the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her first day at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) on Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday — the sovereign feminine takes the tempered essence and softly winnows it.

The body who can offer the soft tender winnowing of the arc’s tempered essence is, faithfully, one of the most discerning sovereign capacities any modern human being ever allows. The chronic cultural pull is toward the keep-everything hoarding of all outcomes — the fear that discarding any received impression might be an unkind or ungrateful act, the compulsion to keep every possibility open, the modern refusal to say clearly what is not essence. Today’s gratitude is for the smaller winnowing the sovereign feminine has always known: the honest tender sorting of the arc’s tempered essence, with the moving air of discernment softly carrying away what will not, faithfully, serve the coming dark days.

Today’s Eight of Pentacles carries this exactly — the sacred first-small-craftswoman, small tender apprentice-sovereign softly seated at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel, softly engraving one small tender pentacle at a time, the small tender completed pentacles hung softly above her on the small tender wooden post, the small tender village glowing softly in the small tender distance, the small tender path winding softly through the small tender fields — the sovereign feminine of the first-winnowing, small tender essence sorted softly by repeated attention.

Healing Practice

The rare embodied capacity for tender feminine winnowing — the body who can, softly, discern what is essence from what is not without harshness toward the chaff or contempt toward what will not, faithfully, be carried forward.

The Sacred First-Winnowing Practice

Waning Crescent Moon Virgo Day 1 on Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday, with the Moon at the messenger-god’s own earth-home, brings a particular invitation to the body: practice the rare embodied capacity of tender feminine winnowing — the body who can, softly, allow the moving air of discernment to sort the arc’s tempered essence from what will not be carried forward, without harshness toward what falls away.

A sacred sovereign feminine softly turns toward the sacred first-winnowing as she is honored by Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday, at Mercury’s own Virgo earth-home where the Moon wanes softly as doubly-Mercury-honored guest, on the day the Eight of Pentacles (Sacred First-Small-Craftswoman) holds the card. And the body who can, today, allow the honest winnowing becomes the body for whom the coming dark days carry, faithfully, only the essence dense enough to seed the next cycle.

The newly-begun cycle carries, faithfully, its own emerging arc: welcoming (Day 1) → anchoring → brightening → deepening → stirring → telling → blessing → choosing → rooting → filling → widening → balancing → threading → softening → flowering → harvesting → integrating → settling → nourishing → whispering → communing → homecoming → releasing → warming → remembering → tempering → winnowing → and the deepening waning days that will unfold toward the coming dark. The fourth week of the newly-begun cycle continues its softening arc.

Today asks the body one small practice: allow one small winnowing. One small honest sorting of essence-from-chaff. One small refusal of the hoarding impulse. One small tender release of one small impression that has already, faithfully, done its service. The small winnowing that only the sovereign feminine’s own discernment can perform.

Today the Waning Crescent Moon rests softly at her first day at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) as the Sun rests softly at her fifteenth full day at Venus’s Libra on Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday — the sovereign feminine winnows the arc’s tempered essence into what will seed the next cycle, held gently by doubled Mercury (Moon at Mercury’s home on Mercury’s own day) and Doubled Venus-and-Sun continuing.

The Somatic Forecast

Waning Crescent Virgo Day 1 on Mercury-dayand the sacred geometry of the body’s tender first small winnowing

The Waning Crescent Moon (~15-22% illumination, waning steadily toward the dark days that will arrive later this week) rests softly at her first day at Virgo (Mercury’s own mutable earth-home). The Sun continues at Libra Day 15 (Venus’s cardinal air-home). Wednesday is Mercury’s own venerated day — the messenger-god is doubly honored: his day, his sign. The sky’s rare doubled-Mercury current runs strong.

Somatically: this is the sovereign feminine’s honest sorting of the arc’s tempered essence from what will not be carried through the coming dark days. The body may notice the sacred first-winnowing softly arriving as the willingness to release — an impression already served, a version of a story that no longer holds true, a piece of over-received data that can now be softly let fall. The small clarity in the mind when one small already-served impression softly releases, the small quiet in the belly when the hoarding impulse eases, the small honest widening of attention when the winnowed essence stands alone in its dense sovereignty.

Mercury (Wednesday’s ruler) softly presides over the day of the messenger and the discerning small work. His visit at his own Virgo throne while the Moon rests at his home is the sky’s rare doubling — today he is not only Mercury the traveler but Mercury the honest reckoner, the small tender scribe who softly writes down only what is, faithfully, essence. Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home continues, softening the whole configuration with relational warmth.

The sacred art the body practices today: not indiscriminate keeping, not harsh discarding, just honest sorting. Eight of Pentacles teaches this exactly — the sacred first-small-craftswoman, small tender apprentice-sovereign softly seated at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel, softly engraving one small tender pentacle at a time, the small tender completed pentacles hung softly above her on the small tender wooden post, the small tender village glowing softly in the small tender distance, the small tender path winding softly through the small tender fields — the sovereign feminine of the small tender repeated attention, honored simply for its own honest discernment.

Today's Quote

Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it.

— Mary Oliver, Red Bird

The context

Mary Oliver — the American poet born in Maple Heights, Ohio, in 1935, who spent most of her adult life in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and later in Hobe Sound, Florida; who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984 for American Primitive and the National Book Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems; who published more than twenty collections over a half-century of writing and became, quietly, one of the most beloved poets of her generation — wrote the poem “Sometimes” for her collection Red Bird, published by Beacon Press in 2008. She died in Hobe Sound in January 2019 at eighty-three, having spent decades walking the woods and marshes alone with a notebook.

Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. These three small lines are, faithfully, Oliver’s most-quoted words — cited by teachers, therapists, contemplative writers, grief-workers, and any sovereign woman who has ever felt the modern culture’s pull toward frantic accumulation and known there was, faithfully, another way to live. Attention is Oliver’s whole spiritual practice, and attention is, faithfully, the sovereign feminine’s honest winnowing: the moving mind that discerns what is essence from what is not, without harshness, simply through the sustained honest looking.

Today’s Sacred First-Winnowing lives in Oliver’s three-line teaching directly. The sovereign feminine at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel is, faithfully, paying attention. The astonishment is the sudden knowing of what is essence. The telling about it is the small tender writing-down of what has been discerned — the record kept only of what will, faithfully, be carried forward through the coming dark days into the next cycle.

For Your Journal

What one small piece of received impression, story, or accumulated data is the body quietly asking to winnow today — not in harshness, not in shame, just in honest sovereign discernment that this small piece has already, faithfully, done its service and will not be carried forward into the coming dark days?

A depth ladder

Sometimes the tender first small winnowing does not open easily. Many of us have been trained, by long cultural inheritance, to associate discernment with harshness — as if the honest sorting of essence-from-chaff somehow betrays a modern imperative toward keep-everything openness. The body’s soft first-winnowing can feel harsh at first — as if allowing one small already-served impression to fall away requires some elaborate justification or an apology to the impression itself.

Three softer entry-points into today’s question, each honoring the body’s own faithful pace:

  1. Already-served door: what one small piece of information, opinion, or received impression has already, faithfully, done its work in your life — taught what it needed to teach, protected what it needed to protect, held what it needed to hold — and can now be softly thanked and released? Write the honoring, not the guilt.
  2. No-longer-true door: what one small version of a story about yourself, another person, or your own inner life is no longer, faithfully, as true as it once was? Write the current truer version, not the outgrown one.
  3. Winnowing-air door: if you softly threw all the current impressions of your inner life into the moving air of your own discernment right now, what would fall softly back into your hands as heavy essence, and what would the wind honestly carry away? Write only what falls back, not what leaves.
A Sacred Practice for Today

The tender first small winnowing of the sacred first-small-craftswoman — five small acts of soft feminine discernment honored as the whole holy work of this sacred twenty-seventh morning on Mercury’s own venerated Wednesday.

I
Find a soft place where the body settles briefly with a hand near the heart and one hand near the belly. A chair. A cushion. A doorway. The body who winnows does not, faithfully, need a formal threshing-floor — she needs only the small permission to notice that discernment lives in the whole body, not only in the analytical mind, on Mercury’s own venerated day.

Today’s medicine begins with the simple physical act of noticing where the arc’s tempered essence is currently being sorted in the whole body on Mercury’s own venerated day. Eight of Pentacles does not, faithfully, demand a dramatic threshing-floor. The small craftswoman simply chisels one small pentacle at a time, and the body who can take this small embodied pause becomes the body for whom the rest of the practice naturally unfolds.

II
Notice one small piece of received impression, opinion, story, or accumulated data currently sitting in the inner life. Do not evaluate the piece. Just softly, faithfully, notice that it exists, that it arrived, that it has taken up small tender room in the sovereign’s inner house. The simple noticing is, faithfully, enough.

Mercury on his own doubled day teaches the sacred art of the scribe’s honest inventory. The noticing of one received impression is the sovereign feminine’s honest first step. Oliver’s line points here: pay attention. The impression is, faithfully, real; the winnowing is not the denial of the impression but the honest looking at what it has been and what it has become.

III
Softly ask the small tender inner question: has this small piece already, faithfully, done its service? Wait, softly, for the honest embodied answer. It may come as a small tender warmth in the chest (the piece is still essence) or a small tender loosening in the throat (the piece is ready to fall away).

Mercury’s scribe-work is enacted in the body by this small honest asking. Oliver’s second line points here: be astonished. The astonishment is the small tender surprise of the honest embodied answer — sometimes the piece we thought was essence turns out to be chaff, and sometimes the piece we were about to discard is, faithfully, the whole heart of what remains.

IV
If the answer is that the piece has already served, softly thank it. If the answer is that the piece is still essence, softly honor it. Either way, the small honest sorting has, faithfully, happened. No dramatic release or grand keeping is required.

The small thanking or honoring is, faithfully, the whole winnowing gesture. Oliver’s third line points here: tell about it. The telling is the small honest naming of what has been sorted — to the self, to a journal, to a trusted sovereign witness. The naming completes the winnowing.

V
Close with the small inward whisper: I winnow softly. I honor what has served. I carry forward only what is essence. The sacred first-winnowing was, faithfully, always mine to allow on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday at Mercury’s own Virgo home.

The closing whisper seals the practice. The body who names her own winnowing becomes the body who inhabits it. Nothing further is required today — the small first-sorting allowed here is, faithfully, the whole sacred first-winnowing, complete on its own tender terms, blessed by Eight of Pentacles in the small tender village-lit workshop of honest discernment.

✦   ✦   ✦
May the tender first small winnowing be offered, softly, through your own actual lived form,
and may you allow the small first-sorting of essence-from-chaff her own faithful pace of quietly discerning what will be carried forward into the coming dark days.
May the small tender winnowing be enough —
the small piece of already-served impression softly thanked and released, the small piece of no-longer-true story softly honored and set down, the small tender air of your own discernment softly carrying the chaff away while the heavy grain of true essence falls softly back into your hands.
May the Eight of Pentacles’ sacred first-small-craftswoman soften with you —
the small tender apprentice-sovereign softly seated at her small tender workbench with her small tender chisel, softly engraving one small tender pentacle at a time, the small tender completed pentacles hung softly above her on the small tender wooden post, the small tender village glowing softly in the small tender distance, the small tender path winding softly through the small tender fields, on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday at Mercury’s own Virgo home.
Instructions for living a life: pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.
The body has, faithfully, offered the tender first small winnowing softly on the sacred twenty-seventh morning of the newly-begun cycle — the Sacred First-Winnowing with the Waning Crescent Moon at Virgo (Mercury’s own earth-home) on Mercury’s own doubly-venerated Wednesday.
