Justice

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  XI  ·  JUSTICE
The tender first small balancing · Sacred First-Balancing · AUTUMN EQUINOX · Day 12 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-balancing-mother of tender first-balancing

A sacred first-balancing day for gentle first-equilibrium-response, tender first-scales-holding,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-balancing settling into the widened direction of the fresh 30-day arc on the sacred day of equal day and night.

The Energy of Justice

Justice carries the energy of sacred first-balancing-mother — not the judge who must render every verdict aloud, but the small tender sovereign who sits already softly at the center with the scales resting in her right hand and the upward-pointing sword resting in her left. She is the eleventh major arcana, and today — Sacred First-Balancing with Sacred Autumn-Equinox-Blessing, on the sacred day of equal day and night — she arrives at the sacred first-balancing moment of the newly-begun cycle.

She is not, softly, asking you to weigh every wrong of your life. She is not asking you to prove that the widened direction has produced visible equilibrium, to defend it against smallness, to make the balancing performable before allowing it. She is offering the small tender settling itself: notice the sacred small tender scales softly in her hand, feel the sacred small tender equal weight of both sides softly present, let the balancing be, softly, a balancing.

This is not equilibrium-performance.
It is balancing.
There is a difference.

Adrienne Rich names it: The moment of change is the only poem.

The sacred first-balancing does not need to be perfect to be true.
She comes, softly, from the very willingness to sit where the widened direction has settled into equal weight.
She has, faithfully, always been welcomed by the scales.

Symbolism of the Card

A sacred first-balancing-mother softly sits at the center. This is sacred continuity of the mother-figure across cards — the hand-from-clouds of the aces, the alchemist of Temperance, the hope-pouring-mother of The Star, the Moon-veiled-priestess of yesterday’s The High Priestess, now the balancing-mother softly seated at the center of the sacred day of equal day and night.

A sacred small tender crown of gold softly on her head. This is sacred first-crown-of-sovereignty — sacred golden diadem worn by the one who softly weighs.

A sacred small tender red robe softly around her body. This is sacred first-robe-of-vitality — sacred red for Mars-Tuesday, sacred solar warmth of the balancing feminine.

A sacred small tender green mantle softly across her shoulders. This is sacred first-mantle-of-Venus — sacred green for Libra rulership, sacred verdant continuity of the garden across cards.

A sacred small tender purple veil softly behind her. This is sacred first-veil-of-mystery — sacred violet echoing yesterday’s The High Priestess veil, sacred continuity of the mystery-holding across the sabbat.

A sacred small tender pillar softly to her right and a sacred small tender pillar softly to her left. This is sacred first-pillars-of-justice — sacred continuity of yesterday’s High Priestess pillars, sacred two-column architecture of the seated feminine.

A sacred small tender scales softly held in her right hand. This is sacred first-scales-of-balance — sacred Libra correspondence, sacred equal weight of equal day and night, sacred small implement of the balancing sovereign.

A sacred small tender upward-pointing sword softly held in her left hand. This is sacred first-sword-of-discernment — sacred Mars-Tuesday resonance, sacred small blade held upward to the sacred air, sacred discernment of the balancing feminine.

Sacred small tender autumn leaves fall softly around her. This is sacred first-autumn-leaves — sacred emblem of the Autumn Equinox itself, sacred small colors of the equinox turning.

A sacred garden softly surrounds. This is sacred first-abundance-continuing — the same garden of every settled thing across the cards. The garden holds every balanced thing too.

Small tender wildflowers grow softly at the base. This is sacred first-earth-blooms — the daily echo continuing.

Sacred small tender mountains rise softly in the distance. This is sacred first-mountains-still-continuing — sacred continuity of the horizon across the sabbat threshold.

Sacred warm balanced-golden morning light holds the whole scene softly. This is sacred first-day-of-Autumn-Equinox-blessing — the balanced light of equal day and night blessing her own first-balancing of the fresh cycle.

This card is about the sacred art of balancing.

Not equilibrium-performance outward.
Not proving harmony.
Simply the small tender settling of equal weight at the center of the widened direction.

Reflection for the Day

What sacred small tender balancing has been softly settling in you, not to be proved?

Justice invites you to stop demanding your fresh cycle prove its equilibrium and, softly, to just let the small balancing settle equal weight at the center of the widened direction.

Not, faithfully, the visible dramatic proof-of-harmony.
Not the equilibrium-for-others.
Just the sacred small tender settling of equal weight at the center of a direction that has, faithfully, already widened in you.

You may notice that balancing feels like stillness.

It is.
Sacred balancing is not, faithfully, an act of striving toward perfect equilibrium.
It is a small softening of the story that harmony must be visible to count as balance.

There may also be an invitation to release the belief that the settling must impress every witness around you.

To trust that today, softly, is enough of a balancing on its own.
To let the small scales in her hand, softly, hold rather than announce.
To honor Adrienne Rich’s quiet insistence: not that you must solve the whole equilibrium, but that the moment of change is the only poem — and one small settled balance is itself the sovereign balancing-blessing.

Thought of the Day

The sacred balancing does not need to prove itself. She only needs, softly, to hold the scales.

✦   ✦   ✦
Affirmation

I turn, softly, toward the sacred first-balancing-of-equal-day-and-night of the widened direction of the fresh cycle,
and I let Justice balance with me without needing to prove I have solved the whole equilibrium.

Questions to Consider

What sacred small tender balancing has been softly settling in me rather than being proved?

Where have I confused balancing with visible equilibrium-performance, or settling with declaring?

What one small act of tender equilibrium-response could I offer myself today on the Sacred First-Balancing morning at the sacred Autumn Equinox?

What would it feel like to trust that one moment of change is, faithfully, already itself the balancing-blessing?

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)” — The Byrds (1965)

The Byrds’ iconic 1965 folk-rock arrangement of Pete Seeger’s setting of Ecclesiastes 3 — sacred male American folk-rock voice, sacred ancient wisdom-text carried by jangling twelve-string guitar, sacred iconic 60s Californian folk-rock tradition — carries the exact quality of Justice’s sacred first-balancing on the twelfth morning of the fresh cycle at the sacred Autumn Equinox: not the resolution of every scale but the small tender chorus of the sacred first-turning softly singing to everything, there is a season / and a time to every purpose under heaven. Justice sits at the center, and the balancing settles like a season only the sovereign can allow.

Parting Thought

You do not have to solve the whole equilibrium today.
You only have to, softly, let the sacred first-balancing settle equal weight at the center of the widened direction of the fresh cycle.

Justice reminds you that the sacred first-balancing was, faithfully, always yours to allow.

Not a dramatic verdict.
Not a productive resolution for the shelf.
Just here, seated at the center with the sacred small tender scales softly in her right hand and the sacred small tender sword softly in her left signaling that the sacred widened direction of yesterday has, faithfully, begun to find balance.

The balancing settling within you today has been settling, faithfully, for exactly one small deliberate act of allowing.

You are not being asked to prove the equilibrium.
You are being asked to let the small scales, softly, hold their equal weight and let the sacred morning balance with you: I balance. I settle. The sacred first-balancing was, faithfully, always offered to me on the sacred day of equal day and night.

Wander wisely, wild one.
