Page of Cups

MINOR ARCANA  ·  COURT CARD · PAGE OF CUPS
Sacred First-Intuiting · Sacred Mercury-Day · Sacred Waxing-Gibbous-Moon · Sacred Moon-Crossing-into-Pisces · Sacred Air-to-Water · Sacred Water-Trine-to-Scorpio · Sacred Eleventh-Morning · Day 11 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-wondering-maiden of tender first-intuiting

A sacred first-intuiting day for the message from the deep,
as the Page of Cups’ wondering-maiden finds a small fish rising from her golden cup on Mercury’s own Wednesday, the gibbous Moon slipping into Pisces.

The Energy of the Page of Cups

The Page of Cups carries the energy of the sacred first-wondering-maiden — the young, open heart who receives messages from the deep with delight. In the suit of cups, which belongs to water, feeling, and the heart, the Pages are the beginners and the messengers. The Page of Cups is the first stirring of intuition, the dreamer, the one who believes in small miracles.

The Page of Cups does not, faithfully, mean childishness or naivety. She is the part of each of us that is still curious, still able to be surprised, still willing to trust a feeling before it can be explained. Her gift is openness: she lets the unexpected arrive and greets it with wonder rather than suspicion.

Today the Moon slips from Aquarius into Pisces, the sign of the two fishes, on Mercury’s own Wednesday — the messenger’s day. A fish rising from a cup on the messenger’s day, as the Moon enters the fishes’ sign: the card and the sky meet almost perfectly.

Symbolism of the Card

A young woman stands barefoot at the edge of the sea in a robe patterned with blue lotus flowers, a soft wrapped turban on her head. In one hand she holds a golden cup, and from inside it a small fish lifts its head to look at her. She gazes back with quiet delight. Gentle waves roll behind her. A sprig of lavender is tucked into her sash.

The fish is the message from the unconscious — something that rose unbidden from the depths into her ordinary cup. The sea behind her is the vast inner world of feeling and dream. The lotus flowers on her robe are spiritual opening, blossoms that grow from muddy water toward the light. She did not expect the fish. That is exactly why she is so delighted.

Reflection for the Day

The Page of Cups on Mercury’s own Wednesday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what surprising message has been rising in me, and am I open enough to receive it?

It may be a small creative idea, a sudden tenderness toward someone, a dream that lingers into the morning, a feeling that does not match your plans. Whatever it is, the Page invites you to look at it with curiosity before deciding what it means.

The Moon in Pisces trines Mercury and Venus in Scorpio today, so heart and mind can speak easily. Let them.

And because the Full Moon is only days away, the reflection asks: what small, surprising truth might the full light soon reveal?

Thought of the Day

Wonder, softly held, is not naivety. She is the sovereign feminine at the edge of the sea, cup in hand, delighted by the small gift that rose to meet her.

Affirmation

I stand, softly, as the wondering-maiden stands — barefoot at the edge of my own deep sea, my cup held open, delighted by whatever small message rises to meet me.

Questions to Consider
  1. What small surprise or unexpected feeling has visited you recently?
  2. Where in your life could you be more curious and less certain?
  3. What dream, image, or idea has been quietly asking for your attention?
  4. How might you greet your own intuition with delight rather than doubt this week?
Quote of the Day
“One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach —
waiting for a gift from the sea.”
— Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

Anne Morrow Lindbergh — born in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1906; a writer who became one of the pioneering aviators of her era, the first American woman to earn a first-class glider pilot’s license, in 1930, and a navigator and radio operator on long survey flights across continents and oceans; the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, diaries, and essays; and who died in 2001 at ninety-four — wrote these words in Gift from the Sea (1955), a small book of reflections composed during a quiet stay by the shore on an island off Florida’s Gulf Coast.

One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach — waiting for a gift from the sea. The line comes from the book’s opening chapter, where Lindbergh describes arriving at the shore tired and full of plans, and slowly learning to stop reaching. The sea, she writes, does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. The book became a lasting companion for women seeking stillness, and this line holds its whole teaching: what is truest arrives when we stop grasping.

Today’s Page of Cups lives in Lindbergh’s words directly. The maiden did not chase the fish into her cup. She stood open at the shoreline, empty and waiting, and the gift arrived.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Dreams” — The Cranberries (from Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, 1993)

The Cranberries — the band from Limerick, Ireland, led by the singer Dolores O’Riordan, born in 1971 in County Limerick — first released “Dreams” as a single in 1992 and included it on their 1993 debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? O’Riordan wrote it with guitarist Noel Hogan when she was still a teenager, and her soaring, yodeling voice made it one of the most beloved songs of the decade.

Today’s Page of Cups moves gently in this song. It captures the giddy, wide-open feeling of a new love or new possibility — the sense that everything is changing and that the change is wonderful. It is the wondering-maiden’s song: young, bright, and unafraid of what the deep might bring.

Parting Thought
May the Page of Cups’ sacred first-wondering-maiden stand beside you at the edge of the sea,
barefoot in her lotus robe, her golden cup held out, a small fish lifting its head to greet her.
May the small tender wonder be enough —
one surprise welcomed, one message received, one moment of delight at what the deep has offered.
May the gibbous Moon, slipping into Pisces on Mercury’s own day, carry your heart’s messages clearly,
and may you always keep a cup open for the gifts of the sea.
One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach — waiting for a gift from the sea.
The body has, faithfully, received a small gift from the sea on the sacred eleventh morning — the Page of Cups’ blessing on Mercury’s own Wednesday.
