Three of Cups

MINOR ARCANA  ·  III OF CUPS · THREE OF CUPS
Sacred First-Belonging · Sacred Moon-Day · Sacred Waxing-Gibbous-Aquarius-Moon · Sacred Air-Trine-to-Sun · Sacred Moon-Opposite-Leo · Sacred Venus-in-the-Underworld · Sacred Ninth-Morning · Day 9 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-circle-of-sisters of tender first-belonging

A sacred first-belonging day for the circle of sisters,
as the Three of Cups’ women raise their golden cups together on the Moon’s own Monday, the waxing gibbous Moon newly arrived in Aquarius.

The Energy of the Three of Cups

The Three of Cups carries the energy of the sacred first-circle-of-sisters — three women dancing together, cups lifted high, celebrating what they share. In the suit of cups, which belongs to water, feeling, and the heart, the Ace is love’s first welling-up and the Two is the meeting of two hearts. The Three is the moment love widens into friendship and community.

The Three of Cups does not, faithfully, mean shallow merriment. It is the joy of being seen and celebrated by people who know you — the friendships that carry us through life’s seasons, the women’s circle, the table where everyone has a place. It is also the card of harvest festivals: abundance shared rather than hoarded.

Today the Moon, ruler of the cups and of Monday, enters Aquarius, the sign of friendship and the collective. The circle of sisters could not ask for a better sky.

Symbolism of the Card

Three women dance together in a ring beneath an open autumn sky. Each lifts a golden cup high toward the others. Their hair is crowned with small garlands of flowers, one with a sprig of lavender woven in. At their feet lie ripe pumpkins, grapes, and gourds — the gathered harvest.

The three raised cups are three hearts offered to one another. The circle has no head and no end; each woman is equal. The harvest at their feet shows that their joy is grounded in real abundance, gathered together. Their garments differ in color, and their steps differ in rhythm. They are not the same. That is why the circle is beautiful.

Reflection for the Day

The Three of Cups on the Moon’s own Monday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: who are my sisters, and when did I last celebrate with them?

Not to accomplish anything. Not to network or help. Just to be together and lift a cup to what you share.

The Moon’s air-trine to the Sun in Libra makes this an easy, warm day for connection. Reaching out may feel lighter than usual.

And because this cycle began in solitude — kindling, meeting, claiming — the reflection marks a turn: now the light you have tended is ready to be shared.

Thought of the Day

Joy, softly shared, is not frivolous. She is the sovereign feminine in a circle of sisters, cups raised, each one fully herself, each one held by the others.

Affirmation

I dance, softly, as the circle of sisters dances — my cup lifted, my heart open, celebrating with those who know me exactly as I am.

Questions to Consider
  1. Who are the people you would invite into your own circle of celebration?
  2. When did you last gather with friends simply to enjoy one another, with no other purpose?
  3. Where do you feel most fully accepted, without needing to change yourself?
  4. What harvest — what good thing in your life — would you like to celebrate with others this week?
Quote of the Day
“True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are.
It requires you to be who you are.”
— Brené Brown, Braving the Wilderness

Brené Brown — born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1965; a research professor at the University of Houston who has spent more than two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy; whose 2010 talk “The Power of Vulnerability” became one of the most-watched talks of its kind; and whose books have brought academic research on belonging into everyday kitchens and living rooms — wrote these words in Braving the Wilderness (2017), her book on the quest for true belonging and the courage to stand alone.

True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are. It requires you to be who you are. Brown draws a careful line between belonging and fitting in. Fitting in means adjusting yourself to be accepted; belonging means being accepted as you are. Her research found that the deepest belonging begins inside — a sense of belonging to yourself — and that this is what lets a person join a circle without disappearing into it.

Today’s Three of Cups lives in Brown’s words directly. The three women in the circle did not have to become alike to belong together. Their belonging is in being themselves, cups raised, side by side.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“We Are Family” — Sister Sledge (from We Are Family, 1979)

Sister Sledge — the four sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim, and Kathy Sledge, who grew up singing together in Philadelphia — recorded “We Are Family” for their 1979 album of the same name. The song was written and produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, who built the whole album around the sisters’ real-life closeness. It became a worldwide hit and an enduring anthem of togetherness.

Today’s Three of Cups moves gently in this song. It is sung by actual sisters celebrating the bond between them, and its joy is contagious — an invitation to recognize the people who are family to you, by blood or by choice. On the Moon’s own Monday, it is the circle of sisters’ dancing song.

Parting Thought
May the Three of Cups’ sacred first-circle-of-sisters dance beside you beneath the open autumn sky,
their golden cups raised high, their garlands bright, the harvest gathered at their feet.
May the small tender celebration be enough —
one friend remembered, one cup lifted, one moment of laughter shared with someone who knows you well.
May the waxing gibbous Moon in Aquarius widen your circle,
and may you always find a place where you belong exactly as you are.
True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are. It requires you to be who you are.
The body has, faithfully, lifted her cup on the sacred ninth morning — the Three of Cups’ blessing on the Moon’s own Monday.
