Two of Swords

MINOR ARCANA  ·  II OF SWORDS · TWO OF SWORDS
Sacred First-Resolving · Sacred Sun-Day · Sacred First-Quarter-Moon · Sacred Half-Light · Sacred Moon-Square-Sun · Sacred Venus-in-the-Underworld · Sacred Eighth-Morning · Day 8 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-deciding-mother of tender first-resolving

A sacred first-resolving day for the crossroads,
as the Two of Swords’ deciding-mother holds her choice in balance by the evening sea, beneath a half-lit First Quarter Moon on the Sun’s own Sunday.

The Energy of the Two of Swords

The Two of Swords carries the energy of the sacred first-deciding-mother — the woman who sits at a crossroads with two choices held perfectly in balance. In the suit of swords, which belongs to air, thought, and truth, the Ace is the first clear idea; the Two is the moment that idea meets another, equally strong, and the mind must weigh them.

The Two of Swords does not, faithfully, mean being stuck forever. It is the pause before a decision — the stillness that comes when you stop letting the outer world choose for you and turn inward to find what you truly want. Her blindfold is a choice, not a wound: she has closed her eyes to the noise so she can hear herself.

Today the Moon reaches First Quarter, standing square to the Sun at the first turning point of the cycle. The Sun is in Libra, the air sign of the scales, the swords’ own element. The half-lit Moon above the deciding-mother’s sea could be today’s Moon exactly.

Symbolism of the Card

A woman sits on a stone bench by the evening sea, a soft white blindfold over her eyes. She holds two long swords crossed over her heart, each one balanced perfectly in her hands. Above her hangs a half-lit moon in the darkening sky. Behind her, small rocks rise from the still water. A sprig of lavender rests at the foot of the bench.

The crossed swords are the two sides of her choice, held close to her heart because the choice matters. Their perfect balance shows that she has given both sides fair weight. The calm sea is her emotions, quiet enough now to reflect the sky. The rocks are the facts of her situation — real, but not in her way. She is not avoiding the choice. She is about to make it.

Reflection for the Day

The Two of Swords at the First Quarter asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: have I weighed this long enough to choose?

Sometimes the honest answer is not yet — and that is fine. More often, the weighing has been done for a while, and what remains is the courage to lower one sword.

The square between the Capricorn Moon and the Libra Sun gives the reflection its edge: Capricorn wants to commit, Libra wants to keep things fair and balanced. Both voices deserve a hearing. Then one must lead.

And because this is the first turning point of the new cycle, the choice you make today shapes the next two weeks of growth toward the Full Moon.

Thought of the Day

Deciding, softly done, is not losing the other path. She is the sovereign feminine lowering one sword with a steady hand, honoring what she did not choose even as she walks toward what she did.

Affirmation

I sit, softly, as the deciding-mother sits — swords crossed over my heart, listening inward, and when the way is clear, I lower one sword and walk forward with a quiet yes.

Questions to Consider
  1. What two options are you holding in balance right now, and how long have you been holding them?
  2. What outer voices have you been letting weigh in that you might need to close your eyes to for a moment?
  3. If you knew no choice would be perfect, which would you choose today?
  4. What would it feel like in your body to lower one of the swords?
Quote of the Day
“Character — the willingness to accept responsibility
for one’s own life — is the source
from which self-respect springs.”
— Joan Didion, “On Self-Respect”

Joan Didion — born in Sacramento, California, in 1934, a fifth-generation Californian; who won an essay contest sponsored by Vogue as a college senior and went to work at the magazine in New York; who became one of the defining essayists of her time with Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979); whose memoir of grief, The Year of Magical Thinking (2005), won the National Book Award; and who died in 2021 at eighty-seven — wrote these words in “On Self-Respect,” an essay first published in Vogue in 1961 and later collected in Slouching Towards Bethlehem.

Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs. Didion wrote the essay during a hard stretch of her own young life, working out what self-respect really was. Her answer was clear-eyed: it does not come from being admired or from avoiding mistakes. It comes from owning your choices — making them, living with them, and choosing again.

Today’s Two of Swords lives in Didion’s words directly. The deciding-mother’s choice will not be perfect. It will be hers — and owning it is where her self-respect begins.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Fast Car” — Tracy Chapman (from Tracy Chapman, 1988)

Tracy Chapman — born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1964, who was raised by her mother and played guitar from childhood — released “Fast Car” in 1988 on her self-titled debut album. A performance at a Wembley Stadium concert that summer carried the song around the world, and it won her the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Decades later it found a whole new generation of listeners.

Today’s Two of Swords moves gently in this song. It is the story of a young woman at a crossroads, weighing the life she has against the chance to leave it, and deciding — once, and then again — to choose a way forward. Its spare guitar and steady voice carry the exact feeling of the deciding-mother’s pause: hope and fear held in balance until one sword is lowered.

Parting Thought
May the Two of Swords’ sacred first-deciding-mother sit beside you by the still evening sea,
her swords crossed and balanced over her heart, the half-lit Moon above her, the rocks quiet in the water behind.
May the small tender choice be enough —
both sides honestly weighed, one sword gently lowered, one quiet yes spoken into the evening air.
May the First Quarter Moon in Capricorn steady your hand,
and may the Sun on his own Sunday light the way you choose.
Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs.
The body has, faithfully, lowered one sword on the sacred eighth morning — the Two of Swords’ blessing at the First Quarter of the newly-begun cycle.
