Wheel of Fortune

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  X · WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Sacred First-Hoping · Sacred Jupiter-Day · Sacred Waxing-Crescent-Sagittarius-Moon · Sacred Doubled Jupiter · Sacred Fire-Trine-to-Leo · Sacred Venus-in-the-Underworld · Sacred Fifth-Morning · Day 5 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-Fortuna-mother of tender first-hoping

A sacred first-hoping day for the turning wheel,
as Fortuna guides her great golden wheel with an open hand on Jupiter’s own Thursday, the crescent bright in Jupiter’s fire sign.

The Energy of the Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune carries the energy of the sacred first-Fortuna-mother — the ancient goddess Fortuna, who turns the great wheel of life with one open hand. She is the tenth card of the Major Arcana, the midpoint of the journey, the reminder that nothing stays still: what rises will fall, and what has fallen will rise again.

The Wheel of Fortune does not, faithfully, mean random luck or helplessness. It is the card of cycles and timing — the wisdom of knowing that life moves in seasons, and that a turn for the better is always possible. In traditional correspondences, the card is ruled by Jupiter, the great benefic.

And today belongs to Jupiter twice over. The Moon is in Sagittarius, Jupiter’s sign, on Thursday, Jupiter’s day. Fortuna’s wheel could hardly ask for a kinder sky.

Symbolism of the Card

A great golden wheel floats in a clear blue sky among soft clouds. Its rim is marked with old letters and alchemical signs. A small sphinx rests calmly at its crown, and the four winged creatures — lion, bull, eagle, and winged one — read open books in the four corners. In our telling, Fortuna herself turns the wheel gently with one open hand, a sprig of lavender tucked behind her ear.

The wheel is the cycle of life itself, always in motion. The letters around its rim spell out ancient words for law and truth. The sphinx is calm wisdom that sits steady at the top no matter how the wheel turns. The four creatures read their books because they are learning from every turn. Fortuna does not grip the wheel. She guides it with an open palm.

Reflection for the Day

The Wheel of Fortune on Jupiter’s own Thursday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: can I trust the turning of my life, even the parts I cannot control?

Not resign myself to it. Not try to force it. Trust it — the way a sailor trusts the tides, learning to work with them rather than against them.

The doubled Jupiter of this day leans the wheel toward good fortune. It is a good day to notice what is turning in your favor, and to say yes to it.

And because this is only the fifth morning of the new cycle, the reflection offers a promise: whatever position you began this cycle in, the wheel is already moving.

Thought of the Day

Fortune, softly trusted, is not chance. She is the sovereign feminine with her open hand on the turning wheel, calm at its center because she knows every season passes.

Affirmation

I turn, softly, with the Wheel of Fortune — my hand open, my heart steady, trusting that what has fallen can rise and that good things come round again.

Questions to Consider
  1. Where is the wheel of your life turning right now — rising, falling, or pausing at the top?
  2. What past hardship eventually turned into something you are grateful for?
  3. What are you trying to hold still that might need to keep turning?
  4. What good fortune could you say yes to this week, if you let yourself notice it?
Quote of the Day
“I’m not afraid of storms,
for I’m learning how to sail my ship.”
— Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

Louisa May Alcott — born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1832, and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, among the circle of Emerson and Thoreau; who grew up in a family often short of money and began writing stories to help support them; who served as a nurse in a Union hospital during the Civil War; whose novel Little Women, published in two parts in 1868 and 1869, became one of the most beloved books ever written for and about girls; and who died in 1888 at fifty-five — gave these words to the youngest March sister, Amy, in the second part of the novel.

I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship. Amy says it as a young woman finding her own course after disappointment, choosing to meet whatever weather comes rather than hoping for calm seas. The line has outlived the novel’s other scenes in many readers’ hearts because it holds a mature kind of hope: not the hope that nothing will go wrong, but the confidence that you can learn to handle what does.

Today’s Wheel of Fortune lives in Alcott’s words directly. Fortuna’s wheel will bring storms as surely as fair skies. Amy March’s hope is the card’s own: not that the weather will always be kind, but that we are learning, turn by turn, to sail.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” — Doris Day (from The Man Who Knew Too Much, 1956)

Doris Day — born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1922, who turned to singing after a car accident ended her hopes of a dancing career — introduced “Que Sera, Sera” in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film The Man Who Knew Too Much. Written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became the signature song of her long career.

Today’s Wheel of Fortune moves gently in this song. It is a mother’s answer to a child asking what the future will hold: no one can know, and that is all right. On Jupiter’s own Thursday, it carries Fortuna’s wisdom in a lullaby — the future is not ours to see, and we can still sing.

Parting Thought
May the Wheel of Fortune’s sacred first-Fortuna-mother turn the great golden wheel gently for you,
her open hand on its rim, the sphinx calm at its crown, the four creatures reading in the corners of the sky.
May the small tender trust be enough —
one hard season remembered as a turning point, one good fortune welcomed, one storm met with a steady hand on the tiller.
May Jupiter, honored twice on his own Thursday, bless the turning of your days,
and may the wheel bring round to you every good thing you are ready to receive.
I’m not afraid of storms, for I’m learning how to sail my ship.
The body has, faithfully, trusted the turning on the sacred fifth morning — the Wheel of Fortune’s blessing on Jupiter’s own Thursday.

The Hermit

MAJOR ARCANA  ·  IX · THE HERMIT
The tender first small releasing · Sacred First-Releasing · Sacred Last-Quarter-Moon · Sacred Saturn-Day · Sacred Moon-At-Home-in-Cancer · Sacred Sun-Moon-Cardinal-Square · Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home · Sacred Post-Harvest-Release · Day 23 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-wise-elder-feminine of tender first-releasing

A sacred first-releasing day for gentle post-homecoming-inward-turning, tender first-lantern-holding,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-releasing meeting the homecomed arc of the fresh 30-day cycle as the Moon herself completes softly her waning gibbous journey and softly arrives at the sacred Last Quarter threshold within Cancer (her own venerated domicile home) on Saturn’s own venerated day.

The Energy of The Hermit

The Hermit carries the energy of sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her inward-lantern — not the achiever who must produce visible wisdom with fanfare, but the small tender sovereign feminine who already softly holds the sacred small tender lantern as the sacred first-basket-of-homecoming softly releases across her own embodied threshold. She is the sacred first-releasing after the sacred first-homecoming, and today — Sacred First-Releasing with Sacred Last-Quarter-Moon and Sacred Saturn-Day, on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday when the Moon herself reaches the sacred Last Quarter threshold within her own venerated Cancer home — she arrives at the sacred first-releasing moment of the newly-begun cycle, at the sacred threshold of the fourth full week of practice.

She is not, softly, asking you to complete the whole release. She is not asking you to prove that the homecoming has produced visible letting-go, to defend it against smallness, to make the releasing performable before allowing it. She is offering the small tender releasing itself: notice the sacred small tender lantern softly held before you, feel the sacred small tender staff softly at your side, let the releasing be, softly, a releasing.

This is not surrender.
It is releasing.
There is a difference.

May Sarton names it: Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self.

The sacred first-releasing does not need to force the letting-go to be true.
She comes, softly, from the very willingness to let the homecomed basket set down what no longer belongs as The Hermit blesses her own venerated threshold.
She has, faithfully, always been witnessed by the six-pointed star softly glowing within the lantern.

Symbolism of the Card

Sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her hood-of-inward-turning. This is sacred continuity of the mother-figure across cards — the hand-from-clouds of the aces, the alchemist of Temperance, the hope-pouring-mother of The Star, the Moon-veiled-priestess of the High Priestess, the balancing-mother of Justice, the crossing-mother of Six of Swords, the cup-mother of Ace of Cups, the two cup-mothers of Two of Cups, the fire-queen-mother of Queen of Wands, the sovereign empress-mother of The Empress, the lunar-witness of The Moon, the earth-mother-queen of Queen of Pentacles, the messenger-witness of The Magician, the relational-witness of The Lovers, yesterday’s water-mother-queen of Queen of Cups, now the sacred first-wise-elder-feminine softly with her inward-lantern at the sacred Saturday Saturn-day.

Sacred small tender lantern softly held before her. This is sacred first-inward-light — sacred first-Hermetic-star softly within (sacred first-six-pointed-star of hermetic wisdom), sacred first-Saturn-day-illumination for the sacred Last Quarter threshold.

Sacred small tender staff softly at her side. This is sacred first-Saturn-staff — sacred first-support-of-solitude, sacred first-elder-wisdom-column continuing softly from the twelve prior cards.

Sacred small tender autumn-mountain-peak softly at her feet. This is sacred first-elevation-witness — sacred first-perspective-summit softly claimed, sacred first-autumn-continuation replacing softly the traditional snow with sacred small tender autumn leaves at her feet.

Sacred small tender greyed-cream gown softly draped. This is sacred first-Saturn-day-robe — sacred first-hermit-cloak of gentle austerity, sacred first-wise-elder-textile of soft sovereign solitude.

Sacred small tender pearl-of-wisdom softly at her heart. This is sacred first-Cancer-continuity — sacred first-Moon-pearl from yesterday’s Queen of Cups softly carried forward, sacred first-luminous-witness at the heart-center of the wise-elder-feminine.

Sacred small tender autumn leaves softly falling around her. This is sacred first-autumn-leaves-continuity — sacred continuity from Days 12 through 22, sacred first-Last-Quarter-release made visible on the ground, sacred first-October-arrival deepening softly.

Sacred warm dawn-silver-lantern-light holds the whole scene softly. This is sacred first-Saturn-day-silver — sacred silver-honey for Saturn’s own venerated day, sacred first-Saturn-day-silver-lantern-light of the sacred first-releasing-morning at the sacred Last Quarter threshold.

This card is about the sacred art of releasing.

Not surrender-declaration outward.
Not proving letting-go.
Simply the small tender basket-of-homecoming softly setting down what no longer belongs at the wise-elder threshold.

Reflection for the Day

What sacred small tender releasing has been softly waiting in you, not to be surrendered?

The Hermit invites you to stop demanding your fresh cycle prove its letting-go and, softly, to just let the small releasing set down at the center of the homecomed basket.

Not, faithfully, the visible dramatic proof-of-surrender.
Not the polished release-declaration.
Just the sacred small tender basket-of-homecoming setting down softly what no longer belongs that has, faithfully, already begun to release in you.

You may notice that releasing feels like solitude.

It is.
Sacred releasing is not, faithfully, an act of striving to force the letting-go.
It is a small softening of the story that solitude must be feared to count as sovereign.

There may also be an invitation to release the belief that the releasing must impress every witness around you.

To trust that today, softly, is enough of a releasing on its own.
To let the small homecoming, softly, set down what no longer belongs rather than announce.
To honor May Sarton’s quiet insistence: not that loneliness is your inheritance, but that solitude is the richness of self — and one small tender releasing is itself the sovereign richness-blessing.

Thought of the Day

The sacred releasing does not need to force the letting-go. She only needs, softly, to let the homecomed basket set down what no longer belongs at Saturn’s own pace.

✦   ✦   ✦
Affirmation

I turn, softly, toward the sacred first-releasing-into-solitude of the homecomed basket of the fresh cycle,
and I let The Hermit hold softly her inward-lantern without needing to prove I have surrendered the whole letting-go.

Questions to Consider

What sacred small tender homecoming has been softly waiting to set down what no longer belongs in me rather than being surrendered?

Where have I confused releasing with surrender, or solitude with loneliness?

What one small act of tender lantern-holding could I offer myself today on the Sacred First-Releasing morning on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday?

What would it feel like to trust that one small tender letting-go of the homecomed basket is, faithfully, already itself the richness-blessing?

Quote of the Day

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Let It Be” — The Beatles (1970)

The Beatles’ luminous 1970 title track from the album Let It Be — sacred male vocal harmonies of the sacred contemporary release-hymn tradition, Paul McCartney’s composition invoking his own late mother Mary as the sacred first-elder-feminine of comfort — carries the exact quality of The Hermit’s sacred first-releasing on the twenty-third morning of the fresh cycle on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday: not the forcing of the whole surrender but the small tender chorus of the sacred first-letting-go softly singing when I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me… let it be, let it be. The sovereign wise-elder-feminine holds softly her inward-lantern, and the releasing gathers like silver-honey only the sovereign feminine can bless softly into.

Parting Thought

You do not have to force the whole letting-go today.
You only have to, softly, let the sacred first-releasing set down at the center of the homecomed basket of the fresh cycle.

The Hermit reminds you that the sacred first-releasing was, faithfully, always yours to allow.

Not a dramatic surrender-declaration.
Not a productive letting-go for the shelf.
Just here, softly holding the sacred small tender lantern at your own actual autumn-mountain-peak as the sacred small tender staff softly steadies beside you and the sacred small tender autumn leaves softly fall around you signaling that the sacred homecomed basket of yesterday has, faithfully, begun to release in you.

The releasing threshold within you today has been arriving, faithfully, for exactly one small deliberate act of allowing.

You are not being asked to prove the surrender.
You are being asked to let the small homecoming, softly, set down what no longer belongs under Saturn’s own venerated Saturday and let the sacred morning release with you: I release. I hold the lantern. The sacred first-releasing was, faithfully, always offered to me on Saturn’s own venerated Saturday.

Wander wisely, wild one.
