Three of Wands

MINOR ARCANA  ·  III OF WANDS · THREE OF WANDS
Sacred First-Seeking · Sacred Mercury-Day · Sacred Waxing-Crescent-Sagittarius-Moon · Sacred Moon-Entering-Jupiter’s-House · Sacred Fire-Trine-to-Leo · Sacred Venus-in-the-Underworld · Sacred Fourth-Morning · Day 4 of the newly-begun cycle · Sacred first-horizon-seeker of tender first-seeking

A sacred first-seeking day for the far horizon,
as the Three of Wands’ horizon-seeker watches her ships sail out on Mercury’s own Wednesday, the crescent risen into Sagittarius’s fire.

The Energy of the Three of Wands

The Three of Wands carries the energy of the sacred first-horizon-seeker — the woman who has planted her roots and now turns to look outward. In the suit of wands, which belongs to fire, spirit, and creative drive, the Ace is the spark and the Two is the first plan. The Three is the moment the plan is set in motion and you stand watching it sail.

The Three of Wands does not, faithfully, mean waiting idly. It is active anticipation: you have done your part, sent your ships out, and now you look ahead with confidence and curiosity. It is the card of foresight, expansion, and trusting that what you began will return to you enriched.

Today’s sky suits her well. The Moon has entered Sagittarius, the fire sign of journeys and far horizons, and sends a warm trine to Mars and Jupiter in Leo. Fire calls to fire, and the horizon-seeker’s staffs hum with it.

Symbolism of the Card

A woman stands on a high green ridge above the sea, seen from behind, her cloak lifted by the wind. Three tall living staffs rise beside her: she rests one hand on one, and the other two are planted firmly in the earth. Below, small ships with bright sails move out across golden water. A sprig of lavender is tucked into her belt. Her gaze is fixed on the far horizon.

The three staffs are what she has built — rooted, growing, steady enough to lean on. The ships are her hopes and efforts, already underway. Her back is to us because she is looking forward, not back. She is not anxious about the ships. She has done her part, and now she simply watches with wonder.

Reflection for the Day

The Three of Wands on Mercury’s own Wednesday asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question: what have I already set in motion, and can I trust it to unfold?

Often we plant a seed and then dig it up every day to check on it. The horizon-seeker shows another way: plant, send, then watch with patience and curiosity.

The Moon in Sagittarius encourages a wide view today. Step back from the details and look at the shape of where you are heading — the far horizon rather than the next step.

And because this is the fourth morning of a new cycle, the reflection invites you to look ahead: what would you love to see arriving on your shore by the time this Moon is full?

Thought of the Day

Foresight, softly held, is not worry. She is the sovereign feminine on her green ridge, rooted among her staffs, watching her ships sail out with a calm and curious heart.

Affirmation

I stand, softly, as the horizon-seeker stands — rooted in what I have built, my gaze free and far, trusting the ships I have sent to return to me enriched.

Questions to Consider
  1. What “ships” have you already sent out — efforts, hopes, or plans now underway?
  2. What are your three planted staffs — the things that keep you rooted while you look outward?
  3. Where do you tend to check on your seeds too often, and how could you trust them more?
  4. What would you love to see arriving on your shore by the Full Moon later this month?
Quote of the Day
“To awaken quite alone in a strange town
is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.”
— Freya Stark, Baghdad Sketches

Freya Stark — born in Paris in 1893 and raised between England and the Italian hills; who taught herself Arabic and Persian; who in the late 1920s and 1930s traveled, often alone, through the remote valleys of Persia and the southern Arabian peninsula, mapping places few outsiders had recorded; who wrote more than two dozen books of travel and letters; and who lived until 1993, dying in Asolo, Italy, at one hundred — wrote these words in Baghdad Sketches, her first book, published in 1932.

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world. Stark wrote at a time when a woman traveling alone was thought reckless at best. Her line turns that fear inside out: waking somewhere unknown, with no one expecting anything of you, is not lonely but delicious — the purest form of freedom. The sentence goes on to describe being surrounded by adventure, without knowing what the day will bring. It is the seeker’s pleasure in a single breath.

Today’s Three of Wands lives in Stark’s words directly. The horizon-seeker does not stand on her ridge in dread. She stands there in delight, imagining the strange and wonderful towns her ships will reach.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Wide Open Spaces” — The Chicks (from Wide Open Spaces, 1998)

The Chicks — the Texas trio of Natalie Maines and the sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer, then known as the Dixie Chicks — released “Wide Open Spaces” as the title track of their 1998 major-label debut. The song was written by the Texas songwriter Susan Gibson, and it reached number one on the Billboard country chart; the album went on to win the Grammy for Best Country Album.

Today’s Three of Wands moves gently in this song. It tells of a young woman leaving home in search of room to grow, to make her own mistakes and find her own way — the eager, slightly nervous joy of setting out. On the fourth morning, as the Moon enters Sagittarius, it is the horizon-seeker’s anthem.

Parting Thought
May the Three of Wands’ sacred first-horizon-seeker stand beside you on the high green ridge,
her cloak lifted by the wind, her staffs rooted in the earth, her eyes on the shining sea.
May the small tender foresight be enough —
ships already sailing, roots already planted, a heart calm enough to wait and curious enough to wonder.
May the crescent Moon in Sagittarius light your far horizon,
and may every ship you send return to you carrying more than it took.
To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.
The body has, faithfully, looked toward the horizon on the sacred fourth morning — the Three of Wands’ blessing on Mercury’s own Wednesday.
