Today, softly, the body offers the tender first small kindling — one small step onto the new path, one thread of new light welcomed, without needing to see where the road leads.
The sacred first morning opens the newly-begun cycle. Yesterday the New Moon closed the old circle in the dark; today the first thin thread of the waxing crescent returns. It is barely there — a sliver the eye may not catch against the evening sky — but the light has turned toward growing.
Kindling is not, faithfully, a bonfire. She is the first small flame coaxed from a spark: fragile, patient, fed a little at a time. It is Sunday, the Sun’s own day, and the Moon crosses from Libra into Scorpio around midday, moving toward Venus, who still walks retrograde there. The affirmation names the practice: take one small step, and let the light grow at its own pace.
Today, I give thanks for beginning — the simple, sacred gift of a first morning, a clean page, and the courage it takes to step onto a road I cannot yet see.
The body who brought the last cycle all the way around now stands at the first morning of the next. Thirty mornings of practice rest behind her like a well-packed bundle. She carries them lightly.
The chronic cultural pull is to treat beginnings as a test — to arrive at them already knowing, already planned, already sure. Today’s gratitude honors beginnings as they truly are: uncertain, bright, and a little wild.
Today’s Fool carries this exactly — the sacred first-stepping-maiden standing lightly at the edge of the cliff in the bright morning, a small white rose held in one hand, a small bundle tied to the staff resting on her shoulder, her face lifted toward the open sky, a small white dog leaping at her heels, the sun shining full and golden behind her, a sprig of lavender tucked into her bundle. She is not careless. She is open.
The rare embodied capacity for tender feminine beginning — the body who can, softly, take one step into the unknown with an open face, trusting the path to meet her foot.
The first waxing crescent on the Sun’s own Sunday brings a particular invitation to the body: practice beginning without armor. Not reckless, not naive — simply willing to be new at something.
The young Moon crosses into Scorpio today, the sign of depth and truth, where Venus walks retrograde and Mercury travels beside her. A new cycle that begins by moving toward depth asks for honest beginnings — steps taken from the real self rather than the performed one.
The newly-begun cycle carries, faithfully, its first word: kindling. Twenty-nine more mornings will follow, and each will add its own. Today’s is the smallest flame, and the most important.
Today asks the body one small practice: allow one small beginning. One small step into something new. One small spark fed gently. One small yes spoken with an open face.

Today the first thread of new light returns. The waxing crescent leaves Libra and crosses into Scorpio around midday, moving toward Venus, who walks retrograde there with Mercury. It is the Sun’s own Sunday and the first morning of the newly-begun cycle — a beginning that turns, from its very first hours, toward depth.

First crescent crossing into Scorpio on Sun-dayand the sacred geometry of the body’s tender first small kindling
About a day after yesterday’s New Moon at Libra 17°, the Moon has pulled just far enough from the Sun to begin reflecting light again — only a sliver, around 1–3%, too thin for most eyes to find. She spends her morning in the last degrees of Libra and crosses into Scorpio around midday Central time. The Sun rests at Libra 18°.
In Scorpio the young Moon enters the sign where Venus has been retrograde since October 3, and where Mercury travels too. Over the next day she draws toward Venus. The old stories would call this the maiden going to visit the goddess in the underworld — the new light carried down to where love is renewing herself. It is a tender, private kind of beginning.
Somatically: first crescents often bring a small lift after the heaviness of the dark moon. The small spark behind the breastbone, the small curiosity that wakes before the plan does, the small wish to try one new thing. Scorpio adds depth to it — the beginning may feel quietly serious, like a vow rather than a whim.
The sacred art the body practices today: not the grand launch, just the first honest step. The Fool teaches this exactly — the sacred first-stepping-maiden standing lightly at the edge of the cliff in the bright morning, a small white rose held in one hand, a small bundle tied to the staff resting on her shoulder, her face lifted toward the open sky, a small white dog leaping at her heels, the sun shining full and golden behind her, a sprig of lavender tucked into her bundle. Her step is small. Her face is open. That is the whole teaching.

Life is either a daring adventure,
or nothing.
— Helen Keller, Let Us Have Faith
Helen Keller — born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880; who lost her sight and hearing to illness before she was two; who at nearly seven met her teacher Anne Sullivan, and with her found language through the word “water” spelled into her palm at a pump; who in 1904 became the first deafblind person to earn a bachelor’s degree, from Radcliffe College; who wrote a dozen books and spent her life speaking for the rights of disabled people, women, and workers; and who died in 1968 at eighty-seven — wrote this line in her 1940 book Let Us Have Faith, just after observing that security is mostly a superstition, and that avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than meeting it.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. The line is often read as a call to bold action, but in its setting it is gentler and deeper: Keller is saying that no one is ever truly safe, so the question is not whether to risk but how to live inside the risk that already exists. Coming from a woman who met the world through touch alone, it is less a boast than a quiet fact — every day she lived was an act of stepping forward into what she could not see.
Today’s Sacred First-Kindling lives in Keller’s line directly. The Fool steps to the cliff’s edge not because she is certain of the ground, but because she knows no ground is ever certain. The first morning of a cycle is a daring adventure precisely because it is so small and so new.
What small new step is the body quietly ready to take on this first morning of the cycle — not the whole journey, just the first footfall — and what would you tuck into your bundle to carry with you?
Sometimes the tender first small kindling does not open easily. First mornings can feel blank, or the new cycle can seem to demand a big intention the body is not ready to name. The soft first-kindling may feel too small to matter.
Three softer entry-points into today’s question, each honoring the body’s own faithful pace:
- Small-bundle door: the Fool carries only what fits on her staff. Name three small things — a quality, a memory, a practice — you would pack for this cycle. Write the three, nothing more.
- White-rose door: she holds one white rose, a sign of an innocent, open heart. Where would you like to begin this cycle with an open heart rather than a guarded one? Write the place.
- Deep-water door: the young Moon moves into Scorpio today, toward Venus. What is one honest, private beginning you would not need to announce to anyone? Write it only for yourself.
The tender first small kindling of the sacred first-stepping-maiden — five small acts of soft feminine beginning, honored as the whole holy work of this sacred first morning of the newly-begun cycle, on the Sun’s own venerated Sunday.
Today’s medicine begins with the face. The Fool is the only figure in the tarot who walks with her gaze lifted to the open sky. Lifting the face, even slightly, tells the nervous system that the world ahead is to be met rather than braced against.
The Fool’s bundle is small because beginnings travel light. Naming only three things lets the body feel how little it truly needs. Keller’s line points here: a daring adventure is lighter than we think — the weight is mostly in the worrying.
The practice lives in the foot. One physical step is the Fool’s whole gesture, and doing it with attention teaches the body that the path does meet us, one footfall at a time.
The white rose is the open heart the Fool carries into everything. With the young Moon moving toward Venus in Scorpio, this is a beginning that wants to be honest and tender at once.
The closing whisper seals the practice and opens the cycle. Nothing further is required today — the small first-kindling allowed here is, faithfully, the whole practice, complete on its own tender terms, blessed by the Fool’s stepping-maiden on the first morning, beneath the first thread of new light.
