the tender first small tempering

TODAY’S SMALL TENDER FIRST-TEMPERING
Sacred First-Tempering · Sacred Waning-Crescent-Leo-Moon · Sacred Mars-Day · Sacred Moon-Visiting-Sun-Home · Sacred Doubled Venus-and-Sun-at-Home · Sacred Fourth-Week-Continuing · Temperance · Sacred twenty-sixth day of the newly-begun cycle

A sacred first-tempering day for gentle post-releasing-hearth-tending, tender first-lion-taming-with-love,
and the soft trust of the sacred first-tempering meeting the released arc of the fresh 30-day cycle as the Moon herself completes Cancer’s tender sacred water and softly ingresses into Leo’s tender sacred fire (Sun’s own venerated domicile home) on Sun’s own venerated day.

The Energy of the Day

Today, the Waning Crescent Moon (~22-28%) rests softly at her third day at Leo’s tender sacred fire (the Sun’s own venerated fire-home, ingressing softly toward Virgo late in the day) as the Sun rests softly at her fourteenth full day at Libra’s tender sacred air. Tuesday belongs, faithfully, to Mars — the sacred small tender smith-god’s own venerated day of the ancient forge and the metallurgical arts of tempering.

The sovereign feminine takes the arc’s remembered warmth (yesterday’s Sacred First-Tempering) and softly tempers it — through patience, through the small alternation of warming and cooling, through the trusting of slow work — into essence dense enough to carry through the coming dark days. This is the sacred first-tempering current: not the immediate finished form, not the polished result, just the small tender alchemical blending of what has been given into what will be carried forward.

Sacred First-Tempering is one of the softest sovereign practices the waning arc knows. She is not visible from the outside — no one can, faithfully, photograph a tempering-in-progress. She is the interior alchemical work that shapes the vessel’s essence over time.

What This Looks Like in the Body

In the body, the sacred first-tempering may arrive as the willingness to trust slow-work — a decision that will only fully form over days, a piece of clarity that is still gathering, a small essence that is still emerging in its own time. The small warmth in the belly when the trust of the slow work returns. The small softening of the jaw when the demand for immediate finished form releases. The small quiet knowing that essence is, faithfully, gathering itself even when nothing visible has yet been produced.

The body may also notice a small tender resistance to tempering — the polishing hand’s anxious pull toward premature completion, the productive-culture voice saying but where is the finished form?, the small tender fear that patience will be mistaken for laziness. All of this is honored. The sacred first-tempering does not require the resistance to disappear; she only invites one small piece of the alchemical middle-place to be softly trusted.

Mars presides today at the smith-forge of the sky. His current in the body is not, faithfully, aggression but ancient craft — the patient alternation of warming and cooling that shapes essence into carry-forward form. The sovereign feminine borrows the smith’s wisdom softly: essence emerges only through patience.

Reflection for the Day

The sacred first-tempering asks the sovereign feminine one small tender question today: what one small piece of my life is currently in the alchemical middle-place, and can I, softly, allow the pouring between the two chalices to keep flowing at its own pace?

The Waning Crescent Moon softens the whole reflection — there is no urgency, no productive demand, no requirement that the tempering yield an immediate essence. The sacred first-tempering is, faithfully, its own whole practice.

Because Mars presides on his own day at the Sun’s Leo throne, the tempering carries a small tender metallurgical current — the ancient smith’s wisdom that essence emerges only through patient alternation, that the too-quickly-cooled blade shatters, that the too-long-heated steel loses its edge. The sacred art today is to allow the alchemical timing to be, indeed, alchemical.

Thought of the Day

The sovereign feminine’s tempering is the arc’s carry-forward gift. What she blends slowly today is what she will, faithfully, have to draw upon when the dark days come.

Affirmation

Today, softly, I trust the slow alchemical pouring between my own two chalices — and the sacred first-tempering is, faithfully, gathering essence dense enough to carry me through what comes.

Questions to Consider
  1. What one small piece of your inner or outer life is currently in an alchemical middle-place — a decision not-yet-decided, a knowing not-yet-articulated, an essence still gathering?
  2. What are the two chalices between which the pouring is currently flowing — what has already been received in this cycle and what is still allowing itself to arrive?
  3. What one small piece of the polishing hand’s anxiety about the pace could you, softly, set down today, allowing the alchemical timing its own faithful sovereignty?
  4. Where does the smith-Mars in your body live today — what part of you knows, ancient and steady, that essence emerges only through patient alternation?
Quote of the Day
“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke, The Book of Hours

Rainer Maria Rilke — the Bohemian-Austrian poet born in Prague in 1875, widely considered one of the most spiritually-oriented poets in the German language — wrote Das Stunden-Buch (The Book of Hours) between 1899 and 1903, publishing it with Insel Verlag in 1905. He died of leukemia in Switzerland in 1926 at fifty-one.

Today’s line is drawn from the Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy translation (Rilke’s Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, Riverhead Books, 1996). The Book of Hours is three sequences of prayer-poems written in the voice of a Russian monk, addressed to a God whose name is softer than the God of institutional religion — a God who is the slow work of becoming.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. This is the sovereign teaching of Sacred First-Tempering itself: the small tender angel does not, faithfully, refuse the beauty or the terror; she simply pours the liquid softly between the two chalices, allowing everything to be blended into essence over time. Rilke’s line is the sovereign feminine’s permission to trust the alchemical process without any single moment having to be the whole truth.

Energetically Aligned Song of the Day

“Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)” — The Byrds (1965); Pete Seeger, adapted from Ecclesiastes 3

Pete Seeger wrote “Turn! Turn! Turn!” in the late 1950s, taking the lyrics almost verbatim from the third chapter of Ecclesiastes (To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven). He added only six words of his own: turn, turn, turn repeated three times, and the closing line a time for peace, I swear it’s not too late. The Byrds recorded it in 1965 with Roger McGuinn’s twelve-string Rickenbacker, and it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of that year, becoming the oldest song to ever reach the top of the American singles chart — the words themselves are, faithfully, over two thousand years old.

Today’s Sacred First-Tempering, held by Mars’s smith-Tuesday and Leo’s waning fire, moves gently in “Turn! Turn! Turn!”’s current: the ancient wisdom that essence is a matter of timing, that every purpose has its own faithful hour, that the alchemical middle-place is not, faithfully, a delay but a season with its own sovereign integrity. The sovereign feminine borrows Ecclesiastes’ wisdom softly — a time to plant, a time to reap — and honors today as the time to temper.

Parting Thought
May the tender first small tempering be offered, softly, through your own actual lived form,
and may you allow the small first-trust in slow work her own faithful pace of quietly gathering the arc’s given warmth into carry-forward essence.
May the small tender tempering be enough —
the small piece of essence-still-emerging softly honored, the small decision-not-yet-decided softly trusted, the small direction-still-forming softly protected, the small remembered warmth softly blended between the two chalices toward what will be carried through the coming dark days.
May Mars’s smith-wisdom soften with you —
the small tender smith-god’s ancient patient alternation of warming and cooling, the small tender knowing that essence emerges only through slow work, the small tender trust that the alchemical middle-place is a season with its own sovereign integrity, on Mars’s own venerated Tuesday at the Sun’s own Leo throne.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.
The body has, faithfully, offered the tender first small tempering softly on the sacred twenty-sixth morning of the newly-begun cycle — the Sacred First-Tempering with the Waning Crescent Moon at Leo (the Sun’s own fire-home) on Mars’s own venerated Tuesday.
